Chichibu Fudasho No.23 Ongaku-ji Temple
Ongakuji , Fudasho No.23rd , is located in a section of Chichibu Muse Park.
After climbing the stone steps, you will see the main hall surrounded by green trees. The main deity is the ShoKannon (Goddess of Mercy).
The temple is beautifully landscaped with cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter. The name "Ongakuji" is said to have come from the 13 saints who opened the temple and heard the sound of the pine wind blowing on the mountain as the music of the Bodhisattva.
The temple bell in front of the hall, a designated cultural property of the city, is cast with 108 nipple heads and six images of the Goddess of Mercy, Kannon, and resonates beautifully and loudly.
The temple is also known for the Chichibu Incident of 1884, when armed farmers gathered on the temple grounds and rose up to the sound of the bell.
