Hosen-ji Temple

Chichibu Fudasho No.24 Hosen-ji Temple

  • Chichibu Fudasho No.24 Hosen-ji Temple

Until the mid-19th century, this was a Shugendo temple, where monks practiced ascetic training in the surrounding mountains.
The Kannon Hall, built in the mid-Edo period, in the early- to mid-18th century, features Chinese-style designs, showing the craftsmanship of the time.
An inscribed board reading “Daihikaku” means “the palace of Kannon giving happiness.”
On the grounds are the Peace Kannon, praying for world peace and happiness, and the six Jizo statues.
Every April 18, locals hold a festival, forming a circle and holding a large 10-meter bracelet of Buddhist prayer beads as they pass it around together.

Miracles of Kannon at This Temple
A Courtesan
Long ago, there was a faithful courtesan. One day, she had a painful swelling in her mouth and suffered because of it. A monk from Chichibu gave her a willow branch and told her to use it to rinse her mouth. Miraculously, her pain completely disappeared.
This mysterious willow branch is said to have been the “Muso no Yoji,” a mystical branch from Housen-ji Temple believed to bring healing.
