Doji-do Temple

Chichibu Fudasho No.22 Doji-do Temple

  • Chichibu Fudasho No.22 Doji-do Temple

Dojido, also known as Eifukuji, is located northwest of downtown Chichibu.

There is a stone Buddha at the entrance to the temple. The statue of Niou standing at the thatched Niou-mon gate is unique to Dojido. The main deity is the ShoKannon.
The Kannondo, with its splendid architecture, dates from the mid-Edo period (1603-1868). On the front door, there are reliefs of the Wind God, Thunder God, and Karyobinga.
The story of the origin of Dojido is that when the temple was located deep in the mountains of Shimizudani in the former Maita Village, smallpox broke out among children, and they worshipped the Kannon and prayed to her, and when they dipped in fresh water from the rocks, their illnesses were quickly cured. There is another theory that after the shrine was moved during the Engi period (1568-1568), it came to be called Dojido (Children's Hall) as the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) to save children from illnesses.
