Chichibu Fudasho No.11 Joraku-ji Temple
Jorakuji Temple, Fudasho No.11, is located about 2 km northeast of downtown Chichibu.
The temple stands on a hillside leading to the Hitsujiyama Hills, with a fine view of the Chichibu cityscape.
In the Edo period (1603-1868), the temple was complete with a Kannon Hall, Niomon gate, and Kuri (a small wooden structure), but it was destroyed by fire in the Great Chichibu Fire of 1878 and later reconstructed. The main deity is the eleven-faced kannononbosatsu.
It is believed to be a guardian deity for healing illnesses and praying for long life.
Although the sect of Buddhism is the Soto sect, it originally belonged to the Tendai sect and enshrines Gansandaishi, or the three great masters of the Tendai sect.
On January 3 of each year, the temple holds a festival for Gansandaishi to ward off bad luck, and on April 20, it holds a festival for Fugen Bosatsu, the guardian deity for those born in the year of the dragon and the year of the snake.
Steep stone steps lead up to the main hall. It is recommended to walk from the Fudasho No.10 , Daijiji Temple, which is only a 15-minute walk .
