Chichibu Fudasho No.6 Bokuun-ji Temple
The principal statue, Sho Kannon, was originally enshrined at the Zao Gongen Shrine on the summit of Mt. Buko, and was later moved to Ogino-do Hall. After the hall burned down and could not be rebuilt, the statue was brought to this temple in 1760. The temple’s Main Hall burned in 1877 and was rebuilt around 1908. After major restoration work, it has been preserved to the present day.
The temple treasure Yamamba’s Tooth is said to be one of three teeth offered by a mountain witch—a yamamba—in gratitude for being saved by a respected monk, as a vow to never oppose the gods or Buddhas.

- A Zen Practitioner
Long ago, a Zen practitioner visited this area and spent six years trying to deepen his skill in waka, traditional Japanese poetry.
One day, he suddenly heard a waka poem, but he did not know who had recited it. The moment he heard it, he realized the truth of impermanence—that everything changes quickly. When he looked for the source of the voice, he found a strip of paper with the poem hanging under a clump of ogi, a type of Japanese silver grass.
Many people believed this was a miracle of Kannon. Later, a hall called Ogi-no-do, meaning “Hall of Ogi Grass,” was built. It is also another name for Bokuun-ji Temple.
