A Chichibu indigo dyer’s Hand Towel overflowing with love

When speaking of Chichibu, an essential thing is the Chichibu Night Festival. So, through the production of this traditional festival hanten (short coat), an indigo dye-house is still run today. That is the Saito Somemono that has continued for 140 years.

When you hear the indigo, of course, you think of the dark blue color, but before the final mixture, indigo is like a mixture of yellow and green. It’s a unique thing when it oxidizes when exposed to air and develops its dark blue color. The dyeing process of indigo dyed over many times after dyed underneath, continues to deliver depth and thickness to the navy blue. That “final” color will be the individuality of each dye store.

Everything is done based on experience, from the color adjustment to the way the air affects it. Saito Somemono, from father to child every now and then, has inherited the unchanging technology and craftsman’s intuition from the time of its founding in a way to tell the technique little by little from childhood, in a way to remember by the body. They always have teamwork when they work. It is a powerful feeling that they get when a beautiful harmonization of their work, without breaking the flow of family, happens as they continue to pass on traditional techniques.

So, craftsmanship of indigo that has been unchanged from long ago, the fifth generation Mr.Tadashi Saito launched a new attempted brand 10 years ago called “Konshichi”. Starting from the indigo dye bags, the Chichibu motif and the cityscape design is a popular pattern on hand towels nowadays.

“I like to make things with a lot of thought. The tool towels, were drawn by a staff who helped me and I knew she liked it so I asked her to draw indigo tools we have. Then, it came out quite good. Of course I’m happy as well as the staff are happy with her artwork so I felt, “This is great!”

Besides that, a pleasant relationship with the Seibu Railway company and the Chichibu Omotenashi Tourism Organization planning goods, produced a towel that expressed Chichibu’s basin flowing to Arakawa River and fireworks in the traditional Chichibu Meisen silk pattern.

I had been away from Chichibu once for 10 years while I was in college. Doing this had merit as I could see the culture and landscapes of Chichibu through different eyes. I think it would be nice if get the opportunity to experience Chichibu through the Konshichi hand towels. Its not simply made by me but an collaboration of connections with various people in Chichibu. There are still many things I want to do with “Konshichi”.”

Chichibu’s indigo dyeing Saito Somemono has supported the strong connection of the region with festivals which will connect Chichibu with other people in the area, taking advantage of the Chichibu connection.
