Chichibu Chijimi: traditional wrapping cloth created by climate and right adaptation

chichibu Senshoku’s workshop is located in the mountains not far from the source of Tokyo’s Arakawa River. Take one step into the sprawling facilities and you will hear the pulsing beat of machines at work.

This is the sound created by the machines that apply Chichibu Chijimi’s unique wrinkle treatment to their cloths. These machines were created for this factories in 1945, and have been carefully maintained over the years in order to continue to treat our products. Processing their cloth using these machines is time consuming, but it results in a wrinkled cloth that feels anything more than mechanically produced. The wrinkling process results in random patterns similar to hand-made textiles, which gives Chichibu Chijimi cloth a unique personality. The fine yet rugged discrepancies and deep wrinkles of Chichibu Chijimi cloth set it apart from other Japanese wrapping cloths. One other essential characteristic of Chichibu Chijimi is its crisp texture. This texture is created when the cloth dries. They do not use drying machines; instead, they take the time to hang- dry the cloth in the Chichibu’s dry breeze, because no other method gives the cloth its unique texture.

There are many other stages in producing Chichibu Chijimi, one of which is manual production. Up to 10 veteran artisans take charge of this stage. “No matter how accustomed we are to the process, the condition of the fabric and the day’s climate never become exactly the same, and these create a different set of demands for the artisans”, explains Saitama traditional artisan, Mr. Eiji Yamamoto.

“Each time we wrinkle the cloth, each time we mix the press’s ink, we make minute changes to the process. The criteria for these changes is really just based on experience, but the artisan’s sense of intuition is a result of ‘right adaptation,’ which comes from each individual’s experiences.

Every few years, we get orders to print on nylon, or to create something that we’ve never tried before. For orders like these, we have to use our experience as a base while working out new processes. We brainstorm with our most skilled artisans, and we work through trial and error. Finding the best process often leads to the creation of new techniques. Creating new processes is hard work, so we just believe that what we’re doing can be done, and continue to move forward.”

This Chichibu Chijimi FUROSHIKI (wrapping cloth) is boldly patterned with the moss phlox flower, famous for bringing color to Chichibu’s spring, along with a traditional striped motif taken from Chichibu’s traditional silk fabric, Chichibu Meisen. When you wrap something in this cloth, you may feel, if just for a moment, a breath of Chichibu’s breeze.

LOVE POINT

Half of the cloth is designed with cute moss phlox flowers, and the other half is patterned with a chic striped motif. The cloth will leave a different impression depending on which side faces outwards, making it a versatile wrapping cloth.
