TUMICCO -WOOD BLOCKS-

Tugumi Craft

Japanese wood blocks that grow together with your children

From 2016, a toy is gifted from Chichibu City to newborns. These are “TUMICCO”, produced by “Tugumi Craft”. TUMICCO was judged to be the winner of a design competition to choose a wooden toy that would be gifted from the city to newborns. This was the first initiative by Chichibu City started in 2015 to promote their Mokuiku action plan “Wood Start”*. The rules for the competition required the toys to use cedar and Japanese cypress grown in Chichibu.

“What should we make from these two relatively soft woods? ”- thought the two owners of Tugumi Craft, and they arrived at making a set of simple toy wood blocks. Wood blocks are generally made from hardwoods because they are intended to be stacked or thrown and used roughly. Wood blocks made from soft woods such as cedar and Japanese cypress become scratched and dented as they are used. However, these scratches and dents can considered as a proof of growth. The way in which your children and the blocks grow together is the attraction of TUMICCO, says Ms.Yumiko Adachi of Tugumi Craft.

“TUMICCO will change over time as it gains scratches or bite marks from children. This change is traces of growth. I wanted to make a toy that would grow together with children. To realize this, we intentionally used soft materials. If you stack them like dominoes, the sound that the blocks make is very soft and gentle to your ears.”

The shape of the blocks are very simple yet unique. The blocks are reminiscent of pointed roofs, and represent the sawtooth roofs on the textile factories that supported Chichibu’s industry. Although the blocks are very simple, they are many-sided and children are able to stack them in many ways to create a variety of shapes. A very Japanese-like particularity is hidden in the size of each block.

“The bottom sides of each block is one-sun (classical Japanese unit of measurement, approximately 3 centimeters) in length. So if you stack 10 blocks, the long side will become one-shaku (10 suns is 1 shaku, approx. 30 centimeters) in length. Foreign units of measurement such as meters have become common, and classical units have become lost over time. However, even today, Japanese carpenters use this shakkan-ho classical units of measurement. TUMICCO’s concept is “Japanese toys made by Japanese craftsmen using Japanese materials”, so I wanted to use Japanese measurement sizes as well.”

The wood blocks come with a cotton furoshiki wrapping cloth made with the traditional Chichibu weaving technique called Hogushi-ori. It will be fun for children to place blocks on the townscape patterned on the furoshiki and build their own cities. The wood blocks produced by Tugumi Craft are hand-prepared by people from Chichibu’s employment assistance center for seniors and wrapped in the furoshiki which is designed and produced by designers and craftsmen working in Chichibu. These wood blocks are the culmination of Chichibu’s natural resources, traditional crafts, and dedicated people.

* “Wood Start” is an action plan initiated by the Japan Good-Toy Association in response to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries’ Mokuiku initiative. Mokuiku is an initiative to increase the familiarity of citizens and children towards wood materials and understanding of wood-based culture. In 2015, Chichibu City was the 12th municipality in Japan, and the first municipality in Saitama Prefecture to declare their intent to start a “Wood Start” initiative.

LOVE point
