Chichibu Fudasho No.29 Chosen-in Temple

  • Chichibu Fudasho No.29 Chosen-in Temple

Chichibu Railway Urayamaguchi Station is located 1 km from the temple, on the south side of Route 140, is Fudasho No. 29, Chosenin Temple.

The temple grounds are spacious, with a cool bamboo grove on either side of the main hall, and the sound of the wind is refreshing. The main image of the SeiKannon (Goddess of Mercy) is said to have been created during the Fujiwara period.
The temple is called "Ishifuda-do" (stone tag hall) because in 1234, Shouku Shonin (a Buddhist priest) delivered a stone tag to the temple during his pilgrimage to Chichibu. The stone tag is engraved with the inscription, "Stone tag fixed place pilgrimage," and is enshrined in front of the main image as a temple treasure.
The ceiling of the hall appears to be covered with Senja-fuda, but it is actually a ceiling covered with carved and black-lacquered nosatsu-fuda. Behind the stone monument to the left of the entrance to the approach is a 600-year-old weeping cherry tree, named "Yomigaeri no Ipponzakura (revived cherry tree)" because its flowers, which had stopped blooming, have started blooming again.
